Samuel Blatchford – one page ALS, December 3, 1873, while serving as a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of New York. Blatchford thoughtfully returns some tickets he could not use due to a scheduling conflict.
Samuel Blatchford was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Chester Arthur in 1882, filling the vacancy of Justice Ward Hunt. Blatchford was a protégé of William Seward, under whom he read or studied law and later served as secretary. He served on the Court for 11 years until his death in 1893. He was succeeded by Edward D. White.
Condition: Fine. It is written on 5.25 x 8.25 folded bifolium of lightly lined stationery, with a blind embossed printer’s seal in the upper left. Flattened mailing folds and a file docket on the back blank page.
