Dannay expresses is disappointment to a book dealer about the cost of a copy of Mark Twain's The Stolen White Elephant, pointing out that the condition is no better than another copy he purchased from the dealer for $1. He suggests the dealer keep the extra $ 2.50 and use it as a credit for other books Dannay will buy.
