Hubbard, Elbert

$175.00

Elbert Hubbard – philosopher, author, founder of the Roycrofts.  Signed letter August 31, 1910 on a 5.5 x 7.5 decorative sheet of The Roycrofters stationery to “Brother White”.  Hubbard thanks White for a special book.  “It certainly makes a very valuable addition to our Little Roycroft Library of Choice Things sent us by Men of Mark.” This is a nice association of Hubbard’s interest in book making.  His interest and the reputation of the Roycrofters for unique bookmaking apparently led to many donations of fine or unique books.

Roycroft was a reform or utopian community for artists and craftsmen, ushering a distinct type of furniture and their own brand publishing company.  Their works featured hand printed books and binding.  The community sustained itself partly through the sale of wood crafts and books.  Hubbard himself was a published author, his most famous work being A Message to Garcia.  Another of his published works was an article about a husband and wife who died aboard the Titanic. In an odd irony Hubbard and his wife would perish aboard the Lusitania a few years later.
