Buchanan, James
Scarce handwritten letter and free frank as President
Buchanan, James - Autograph letter signed, 4to, Washington, May 28, 1859, to John Nickle, Esq of Camden New Jersey, with accompanying free franked envelope. The President thanks Nickle for "the fine Delaware shad."(?) The letter is boldly signed with a full signature. The envelope is addressed in Buchanan's hand and franked "Free James Buchanan" in the upper right corner. The back flap has become detached but is present with a fine intact red wax presidential seal. The letter is in fine condition with a mark or ink blot above the salutation and a pinhole in the upper edge. A vertical mailing fold runs through the "m" of James. The envelope shows some uneven toning but is near fine with a file docket written on the edge in another hand.
Buchanan is reasonably common in handwritten letters in all periods except as President. It is particularly desirable to find the matching envelope with his Presidential free frank and such a nice example of the wax seal.
