van Buren free frank as VP

$550.00

Martin van Buren – intriguing free franked cover on a letter written by his son.  The cover is addressed by van Buren to Genl. P. M. Wetmore in New York and franked in the upper right “Free M. van Buren” A postal cancellation stamps touch the “Ge” of Genl but are clear of the signature. The letter is from John van Buren enclosing another letter from his father – not present – and asks that Wetmore seal and hand that letter to another person.

Van Buren’s The letter was not written by the vice president, but it still was considered official business since it was conveying another letter from Martin and his sons often served as assistants to him.  Within the decade John would have his own franking privileges as a New York Congressman.

The 8vo sheet measures 7 ¾ x 5 ¾. There are some minor remnants of mounting tape on the extreme edges of the franked side of the paper.  Two small spots on the edges suffered minor loss of paper, one from the seal being opened, but have been nicely infilled with closely matching paper.  Overall, an attractive piece and interesting association with father and son.
