Van Rensselaer was a General during the War of 1812, he would then become New York’s Lt. Governor under John Jay, US Congressman and established Rensselaer College (Polytechnic Institute). In the small world of early America’s elite social and political families, he married into the Schuyler family. and his brother-in-law was Alexander Hamilton.
