He notes that that the application will be “duly considered and the appointment, if made, will be duly notified to him.” (i.e. thanks, we’ll take it from here.) Evarts played critical roles in defending Andrew Johnson in the Impeachment Trial (then becoming A.G.), and later in serving as Counsel to Rutherford B. Hayes before the Electoral Commission which gave the disputed election to Hayes. A nice one-page example on State Dept. letterhead.
